MIPSGAL is a survey of approximately 220 square degrees of the inner Galactic plane at 24 and 70 microns using the MIPS instrument aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The survey spans two strips, 10 < l < 62 and 298 > l > 350 with a latitude range of |b| < 1. The primary intentions of the survey are to probe high mass star formation in the Galactic disk, study the distribution and energetics of interstellar dust and provide a uniform, relatively high angular resolution (5 and 15 arcseconds, respectively) dataset for inquiry by the astronomical community. We describe the details of the survey strategy including expected sensitivity and saturation limits, as well as the enhanced data products planned for release to the community. Very preliminary results of the first half of the survey, the recently released 1st quadrant observations, will be presented.
This work is based on observations made with the Spitzer Space Telescope, which is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology under a contract with NASA. Support for this work was provided by NASA through an award issued by JPL/Caltech.
