At restframe 1.6 μ m there is an opacity minimum in stellar atmospheres of cool stars, which results in a spectral energy distribution peak in all but the most extreme star-forming galaxies. The galaxy luminosity at this peak correlates well with stellar mass. Using optical through mid-infrared data in the GOODS fields, we measure the evolution of the λ rest=1.6 μ m luminosity density of luminous galaxies to redshifts beyond two. These measurements are used to assess whether a significant stellar mass is overlooked by techniques which select on ultraviolet flux, and to measure the growth of stellar mass in galaxies over most of the history of the universe. These data are also compared against Λ CDM-based galaxy evolution models.
