Using the infrared spectrum (2 μm to 1 mm) of three luminous galactic regions and the absorption properties of interstellar dust, the authors derive its temperature distribution. They also compute the energy output of interstellar dust as a function of temperature. These distributions are bimodal and do not agree with predictions based on standard models, the amount of high temperature dust being much too large.
