Leo Goldberg and Lawrence Aller began their careers at Harvard and continued for some years at Michigan. Goldberg returned to Harvard and Aller went to UCLA, both in response to a deterioriation of support for the physical sciences in Ann Arbor. Linked in astronomical history by their joint authorship of an influential popularization of observational astrophysics, their approaches to professional and institutional problems, and even to the presentation of the field, differed in interesting ways. This is a discussion of their intertwined careers, science, and approaches to the practice and administration of astronomy in the years of their rise to fame.
