I shall briefly review the theory of diffusive shock acceleration, with particular emphasis on testable predictions for young supernova remnants. Evidence now exists for several predictions of nonlinear shock-acceleration theories: curvature in the radio spectrum of some young remnants, shock precursors of various kinds, and most importantly, acceleration of electrons, at least, to energies in excess of 10 TeV. As yet there is no definitive evidence for cosmic-ray ions. The best prospects for observational study of shock acceleration lie in optical observations of nonradiative shocks, to study dynamical precursors and compression ratios; X-ray observations of remnants with synchrotron components; and gamma-ray observations, both at MeV-GeV energies from satellites such as INTEGRAL and GLAST, and at TeV energies from ground-based air Cerenkov telescopes. .
