This paper summarizes the emission processes that produce the radiation we use to study young supernova remnants. We discuss the relative importance of various processes and the accuracy with which the emissivities or rate coefficients are known, especially in cases where uncertainties in the theoretical or laboratory rates may limit the interpretation of observations. Common assumptions that may break down, such as thermal and ionization equilibrium, are discussed. .
