Infrared observations of SNRs began with the IRAS mission in 1983. Now as more detailed ISO and 2MASS observations of SNRs are being analyzed, we are beginning to see more clearly what the IR has to reveal. For young SNRs this has most notably meant a detailed look at SN ejecta before it is mixed into the ISM. The IR can reveal the presence of elements and gas phases that are undetectable at other wavelengths. The IR emission is also essential for identifying the particular composition and mineral structure of dust grains that form in the SN ejecta. .
