We present an implicit method for modeling low Mach number flows in astrophysical setting. The method is based on the low speed projection method proposed by Colella and Pao for solving inviscid subsonic problems. In this method, a flow field is decomposed into hydrostatic, incompressible and acoustic part. The hydrostatic background is explicitly computed so that the gravity is well-accounted for. The incompressible part is solved by an explicit projection algorithm and the acoustic part by an implicit scheme. Therefore, the acoutic waves are filtered out and the numerical time step is only limited by advection velocity. The method is therefore perfectly suited for modeling low Mach number problems where the sound speed can be several orders of magnitude larger than the flow velocity. Thermal conductivity and viscosity are also treated implicitly in this scheme. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate applicability and efficiency of this new algorithm.
