The group delay in VLBI is described by means of a theory which is based on a formulation introduced by Damour et al. (1990). The consistent formulation of reference systems in the post-Newtonian framework is shown to relate barycentric and geocentric quantities more accurately. An accuracy of about 1 ps is shown for the result of the group delay, which is an improvement over previous results.
