The interest in calibrating monochromatic mid-infrared star formation rate diagnostics is sparkled by their potential application to intermediate and high redshift galaxies observed with Spitzer at long infrared wavelengths. For this project, images of nearby galaxies from Spitzer (obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey, or SINGS) at 8 μ m and 24 μ m are combined with HST/NICMOS images in the Paschenα emission line at 1.8756 μ m, to assess the regime of applicability of monochromatic mid-infrared luminosities as star formation rate indicators. The analysis targets star forming regions/complexes inside the galaxies; applicability to whole galaxies is also discussed.
