The origins of energetic ions (20 keV - 1.5 MeV) in an upstream ion event have been investigated during high solar wind pressure periods when the WIND spacecraft was close to the forward libration point. Three other spacecraft were just in the right locations at the time and were magnetically connected to the possible source regions. The INTERBALL-TAIL was upstream and near the quasi-parallel bow shock and detected an upstream ion event; the GEOTAIL was in the post dusk magnetosheath and observed more than one order of magnitude ion flux change; and the POLAR was near the cusp in the magnetosheath and also observed a significant increase of the energetic ion flux. The ion energy spectra, measured by these three spacecraft, had a similar spectral shape, suggesting that these energetic ions may be from a same source. Simultaneous observations indicated that no comparable flux was observed by WIND. Ion fluxes measured by POLAR were more than one order of magnitude higher than that measured by both the INTERBALL-TAIL and the GEOTAIL. Furthermore, the ion flux peaks were detected first by POLAR than by INTERBALL-TAIL. When the INTERBALL-TAIL was magnetically connected with the bow shock, the energetic ion flux measured by INTERBALL-TAIL was independent of whether the bow shock was quasi-parallel or quasi-perpendicular. These observational facts clearly demonstrate that the cusp is the main source of the energetic ions in the upstream ion event.
