A multiline NH3 and CS excitation study with the highest possible single-dish resolution was carried out to analyze the temperature and density structure of the NGC 2024 molecular cloud core. The bulk emission in both tracers is found to arise from a narrow north-south elongated ridge of dense matter buried within the cloud, whose surface is seen as the optically prominent dark dust lane. The global temperature structure derived from the NH3 excitation corresponds to the distribution of the dust color temperature given by Thronson et al. (1984). A general morphological correspondence is found between the 1.3-mm dust continuum and the high-rotational CS emission maps observed with similar angular resolution.
