The Alfvén-assisted precipitation model seeks to explain the association of field-aligned electron bursts with auroral arcs and Alfvénic fluctuations in the electric and magnetic fields. The model uses Alfvén waves to modulate the entry and acceleration of cold electrons into the region over which the main auroral "inverted-V" potential is dropped. In distinction from other models in which the electrons receive their primary acceleration from small scale-length inertial Alfvén waves, in the present model the main acceleration is due to the same quasi-static potential drop that accelerates the inverted-V electrons. It therefore explains in a natural way the reason that the field-aligned electrons have energies that generally match but do not exceed those of the inverted-V electrons. Another advantage of the present model is that it allows the electrons to attain energies much greater than 1 keV, which is about the limit for the inertial Alfvén model. The present work examines this model in light of new measurements made by the GEODESIC sounding rocket. Realistic Alfvén speed profiles are used to constrain the model.
