This paper presents a short account on the history and significance of the study of the Wilson effect of sunspots, discusses the theoretical basis of the justification or establishement of sunspot models with the observational data of the Wilson effect, and also describes the main achievements in research of this effect and the existing questions. Besides, the author proposes a new and comprehensive definition of the Wilson effect and some suggestions for further work.
