Results of recent searches for galaxies responsible for low redshift Mg II absorption systems found in quasar spectra are presented. New data have been obtained for 12 systems. The available sample (comprising 17 systems when already published cases are included) is analyzed. First, the high success rate indicates that the absorbing galaxies should be well representative of z ≡ 0.5 Mg II absorbers (the presence of numerous undetectable dwarf absorbing galaxies is ruled out). Second, the halo size directly inferred from the observed angular separations to the quasars, R ≡ 3.5 RH, implies, when compared to the radius derived from the number density of Mg II systems, that these galaxies should be also representative of the general field galaxy population at similar redshifts; then nearly all bright field galaxies should be surrounded by large halos, a prediction which can be verified in the future through observation of QSO-galaxy pairs.
