Recent improvements of spectrophotometric evolutionary models are described. Colors and ages of galaxies given by models are compared to the high-z observations, showing that the best fits are obtained with standard luminosity evolution and a low value of Ω0. In a Ω0 = 1 Universe, models fit data only by taking into account luminosity and number density evolutions. Such a modeling is related to a merging process. Moreover from evolution of M/L ratio, these models allow to link observed luminosity functions with the mass distributions predicted from galaxy formation models.
