A detailed confrontation between the photo-chemical evolution model and the observational data is given for galaxies with different morphological types. A standard hypothesis for galaxy evolution - normal galaxies have the same age, mean metallicity, and the initial mass function (IMF), but they differ in their star formation rates (SFR) - is not accurate in detail. It is suggested that there are two modes of star formation in galaxies: one is a spontaneous mode dominant in spheroidal systems (ellipticals, bulges, and globular clusters) and in star-burst galaxies, the other is a stimulated one typical in discs of spirals and irregulars. It is suggested that the spontaneous mode associates with a flat IMF and the stimulated one with a steep IMF. Most of chemical, photometric, and dynamical properties of galaxies are then naturally explained if galaxies belong to a single parameter family of the relative strength of two star formation modes.
