While astronomers agree that a compact object formed from the collapse of SN 1987A, questions remain as to whether this central object is a neutron star or a black hole. Ground-based radio and optical telescopes, as well as the orbiting Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, have been used to scrutinize the supernova for rapidly pulsed emission; the surrounding nebulosity is also under study, and includes a dense gas ring which may be the end-product of colliding stellar debris. It is possible that the SN's progenitor was part of a binary system.
