An evaluation is made of current understanding of the three types of redshift: the cosmological, which is not a Doppler shift and arises from the expansion of space-time itself; galaxy redshift, which can be understood in view of special relativity; and gravitational redshift. A development history for the concepts in question is presented, and attention is given to the unique place occupied by big bang cosmological concepts in the discussion of redshifting.
