This paper reviews a theory of the evolution of the earth and the formation of the present continental masses. The development of the earth as a planet is described as well as the events that led to the formation of the moon. Atmospheric changes, ice ages followed by atmospheric warming, and conditions inducing the development of life are reviewed. Continental changes that may have occurred over the past half-billion years are discussed and illustrations are presented. The development of Pangaea, followed by its breakup and subsequent climatic changes and their effect on life are described.
