Direct photometric evidence has established that the central bulge of our Galaxy (the Milky Way) is actually a stellar bar. The dynamics of the bar will drive material into the Galaxy's center but recent X-ray observations suggest that much of the inflowing gas is driven out again in a high-pressure galactic wind. A small portion of the remainder appears to be falling onto an extraordinarily dense cluster of stars at the Galaxy's nucleus, which may contain a massive black hole.
