The binary nature of AH Vel previously suspected on the basis of radial-velocity measurements is confirmed by three independent photometric methods, using extensive UBV photometry of the star. The open loop shown by AH Vel in the (U-B),(B - V) diagram gives a B-type main-sequence companion about three magnitudes fainter than the cepheid, using the calibration of Madore (1977). The shift of the (U- V) minimum with respect to the of the V light curve (Fernie 1979) suggests a companion that is about 2m.8 fainter in visual magnitude than AH Vel, in agreement with the result from the color-color diagram. Adopting V = -4m.58 for AH Vel (Gieren 1980) the companion is a B3 V star.
The proposal is made to use photometric results for a first identification of possible cepheid binaries, and to carry out through radial-velocity studies of those cepheids for which photometry indicates a companion star.
