Observations of gas velocities and velocity dispersions, measured from the O II forbidden line at 3737 A blend in the nucleus of M87, are discussed. Long-slit spectroscopy with good spatial resolution shows a steep rise in the velocity dispersion of gas in the nucleus, which, if the material is gravitationally bound, implies a nuclear mass of approximately 10 to the 10th solar masses and a mass-to-light ratio of about 60 (in solar units).
