Roberts 22 is a bipolar reflection nebula which shows strong OH maser emission (OH 284.18-0.79) on the 1612 and 1665 MHz transitions, over a velocity range of -30 to +20 km/s, LSR. A refinement of its position yields the mean of three independent estimates measured at both 1612 and 1665 MHz of 10h 19m 45.1s plus or minus 1.2s; -57 deg 50 min 28 sec plus or minus 10 sec (1950). From an analysis of the properties of Roberts 22, other bipolar nebulae are investigated as to the derivation of spectral types for their underlying stars by the assumption of photoionization of the gas, and their evolutionary description as protoplanetary nebulae. It is suggested that Roberts 22 provides a yardstick by which subsequent discoveries of similar objects may be classified.
