X-ray source statistics indicate that while in a massive multiple star system the more rapidly evolving component almost always explodes as a supernova after the Wolf-Rayet stage and thereby becomes a neutron star, in a low-mass multiple system the probability of such a transformation is only about 0.01. This is attributed to the low mass of the C, O stellar cores formed by means of evolution in such systems. The object SS 433 apparently represents an early phase of an X-ray source formed, like Her X-1, in a low-mass binary system. Accretion of material shed by the component filling its Roche lobe onto the degenerate companion could cause the explosion of the latter object. It is noted that more than 90% of type I supernovae occurring in spiral galaxies arise from the evolution of single stars. For this reason, type I's should develop tens of times less frequently per unit mass in E than in S galaxies.
