Proton flux dynamics for energies exceeding 0.5 MeV is studied on the basis of Intercosmos-5 data obtained at the commencement of the main phase of the magnetic storm of February 24, 1972. Intercosmos-17 observations of energetic proton precipitation are compared with simultaneous observations performed by Explorer-45 of 1-560 keV electrons and 1-800 keV protons in the equatorial plane. A detailed analysis is given of two successive injections of ring-current particles and energetic particles detected by Explorer-45. Observations at low and high altitudes were used to analyze the mechanism of energetic proton precipitation during magnetic storms.
