Emission line profiles of C IV 1550 lines in 22 quasars are obtained from spectroscopy with a cooled SIT Vidicon. In 10 of the objects the semiforbidden C III lines are found to have similar profiles. The observed line profiles are well approximated by the Blumenthal Mathews logarithmic model. The distribution of line breadths (FWHM) - augmented by those in the literature - is inconsistent with a randomly oriented collection of disks, all spinning at the same rate. The Baldwin C IV luminosity effect is not seen in these data. The similarity of line profiles of species of differing ionization potentials suggests that the lines are formed in a number of clouds of different velocities; the smoothness of the lines requires (assuming a nonuniform Poisson velocity distribution) at least 300 clouds. The line profiles and distribution of line breadths suggest that the cloud formation is three-dimensional rather than planar.
