The paper discusses the emission of gamma rays from pion decay in the interaction between the cosmic rays produced by a young pulsar and the surrounding supernova shell. The mechanism of photon degradation via pair production in the field of charged particles makes it possible to draw qualitative conclusions about the time evolution of the spectrum of the emitted X- and gamma-rays from 10 keV upwards for this specific process. In the case of the recent supernova in NGC 4321 the resulting flux may well have reached values of the order of 0.000001 photons/sq cm s during a few months, and should have been observable with the available techniques.
