Spectroscopic observations have been made on the extragalactic object VV 493. It has been suggested that this object is a chain of galaxies in the process of formation by fragmentation. While this interpretation cannot be ruled out, the morphology and spectroscopic observations favor the identification of this system as a single unusually fragmented, spiral galaxy.
