The optical properties of silicate and graphite dust grains of various sizes are calculated for the wavelength range 100-3500 A (the proposed working region of the Spectrum-UV project). The interstellar absorption curves for a silicate-graphite mixture with a power-law size distribution are also computed. It is shown that the absorption of radiation by dust and gas becomes comparable at not more than 150 A if there is a significant fraction of very small particles in the interstellar medium and/or the dust/gas ratio is higher than the mean interstellar one.
