The study reports the discovery of a Ly-alpha-emitting object, which is identified as a radio-quiet galaxy at a redshift of 3.428, possibly spatially associated with a damped Ly-alpha absorber observed in the line of sight to QSO 0000-2619. The galaxy is spatially resolved, with an angular extent of about 3.5 arcsec, corresponding, in an assumed cosmology, to about 10/h kpc. The Lyman-alpha emission-line flux is 7.2 x 10 exp -16 ergs/s sq cm, corresponding to a luminosity of 1.8 x 10 exp 43 ergs/s. Assuming that all the Ly-alpha luminosity is due to stars and in the absence of dust obscuration, the inferred SFR is about 18 solar masses/ yr. This discovery provides empirical evidence for the existence of radio-quiet galaxies and clusters at redshifts as high as about 3.4.
