A new method for obtaining the widths of spectral lines generated by energy fluctuations is presented. The energy changes of the atomic states are equated with the fractional fluctuations in energy to yield a formula for the line widths. Comparing the formula for the line widths with some published experimental and theoretical values show good agreement.
