We present improved calculations for the Stark broadening in hydrogen-line DA white dwarfs, which take into account the nonideal effects from the dense plasmas of these atmospheres. Our model is based on the unified theory of Stark broadening from Vidal, Cooper & Smith and for the first time, we account for the nonideal effects in a consistent way directly inside the line profile calculations. The Mihalas, Hummer & Däppen theory is used to describe the nonideal effects with a truncation of the electric micro field distribution in the quasi-static proton broadening to take into account the fact that high electric microfields dissociate the upper state of a transition. We obtain the first model spectra with line profiles that are consistent with the equation of state. This improves upon previous calculations that have used an ad hoc parameter to describe these effects. The most powerful technique to obtain the atmospheric parameters of DA stars consists in analyzing hydrogen line spectra. Using our improved models, we show that the updated atmospheric parameters differ substantially from those published in previous studies.
