A general mapping and the H-alpha absolute flux determination of the H II regions of the galaxy NGC 4258 are given for the first time. They show the pure circular shape of the main and inner southern arms as a consequence of the barred spiral type of this galaxy. The H II regions are cataloged, giving the X and Y offset positions and corrected absolute H-alpha flux and half-flux angular diameters. The problem of evolution is discussed and optical data are extended to the UV domain at 2000 A to interpret the UV-rich stellar populations in both the inner and outer spiral structures. The gaseous structure in normal and in anomalous arms is also examined and compared with CO data. The relative flux increase of various H II regions around the area hosting the SN reported by van der Hulst et al. (1983) is analyzed. A tentative distance value to the galaxy is derived.
