What constitutes a peculiar galaxy? The publication of the "Arp Atlas" triggered more than a simple awareness of strange objects falling outside of the classical Hubble sequence, it foreshadowed and in some large measure stimulated a whole discipline of study in its own right. Today, the study of peculiar galaxies may indeed be the most promising basis for studying galaxies (and galaxy evolution) in general. Past examples and future directions will be highlighted.
