The interaction of X-rays with interstellar dust grains leads to small angle scattering. X-ray sources behind sufficiently dense dust clouds, particularly the bright X-ray sources in the Galactic Center region, are therefore surrounded by halos of faint and diffuse X-ray emission. Since these X-ray sources are also highly absorbed, X-ray observations offer the unique opportunity to measure directly the gas to dust ratio along a given line of sight. The exact knowledge of the correlation between absorption and the dust related quantities (i.e., scattering and, if available, visual extinction) helps, e.g., for the interpretation of data of the Galactic Center itself: with ROSAT, the X-ray source 1E 1742.5-2959 could be resolved into individual objects out of which one component is coincident with Sgr A* within 10 arcsec. But the derived flux is much less than expected on the basis of observations at higher energies. This can be explained if we assume an X-ray absorption much in excess of NH = 5 x 1022/sq cm, the value consistent with the visual extinction AV = 27 of the Sgr A* region. Therefore, most of the observed absorption must be caused by material in the vicinity of the source itself.
