The use of near infrared photometry has revealed many examples of compact energy sources within the cores of giant molecular clouds. More detailed information regarding these sources can be obtained with the aid of spectroscopy in the near and mid-infrared. A representative example of infrared sources observed in dense molecular clouds is provided in a table. The most thoroughly studied object in the table is the Becklin-Neugebauer source in Orion (BN). Its relatively strong continuum at wavelengths in the range from 2 to 5 micrometers makes it feasible to detect emission lines and to measure at high frequency resolution the absorption in front of the source. Attention is given to the near infrared spectroscopy of BN to illustrate the potential of such spectroscopy done at a resolution sufficient to measure the molecular bands. The data presented on BN were obtained with the aid of the Fourier Transform spectrometer at a 4 m telescope.
