Selected results emerging from Saturn observations in late 1979 and early 1980, around the time when the rings were seen edge-on, are reported. A fully coronographic system is used to reduce the light scattered by the planetary disk, thereby improving the technique that was used in 1966. It is found that the so-called E ring is not, strictly speaking, a disk in the sense of the classical A, B, and C Saturn rings but is rather a complex and changing flat structure with arms, streamers, or segments. It is thought that the outer ring could be the visualization of remnant storage of small debris which could be produced by ejecta from meteoroid impacts on Saturn satellites and eliminated by such effects as the Poynting-Robertson forces.
