Reliable light curves are derived for several periodic comets, combining observations made at different apparitions. An analysis of these curves is presented for comets Encke and Tempel 2. It is shown that there is no simple way to reduce the photometric observations of comets and that comparisons with photoelectric observations are the best way to proceed. Wherever possible, photoelectric observations are used to normalize the data and compare the reliability of the visual and photographic observations.
