Attention is given to problems associated with the mechanism of mass loss from early-type stars, with attention to the cases of the OB, Be, and central planetary nebulae stars, for which mass loss rates are derived. The different hot regions of the HR diagram in which the mass loss diagnosis has been studied leads to the conclusion that rates are correlated with luminosity. The rates estimated from continuum and recombination lines still have uncertainties within a factor of two, and UV data errors are probably even larger, due to the present ignorance of ionization mechanisms.
