Several models have been proposed to explain the ejection of material into the chromosphere and corona during solar flares due to the action of electromagnetic forces. These models are compared with regard to the parameters describing the magnetic field evolution. Models involving drift in crossed magnetic and locally enhanced electric fields are the most promising, as the observed velocities could be attained with the least abrupt magnetic field variations.
