Fifty-eight stars were classified in the field of the open cluster Collinder 228. These data and the normal reddening law were used to derive a distance for the cluster of 2.6 kpc. Observations revealed two stars with evidence of weak shells in their spectra, and four double-line spectroscopic binaries, with three others suspected of being SB2. Eight objects were observed in the spectral range B9-A2, but are probably nonmembers, although four of them show interstellar K and H lines. Finally, nine stars (25 percent-30 percent) with broad hydrogen lines were found among the stars with spectra between B0 and B2
