The initial fragmentation of a 'pancaking' protocluster of galaxies is considered. The fragment mass is determined by the Jeans mass at the time when the collapse time-scale of the fragment is equal to the growth time-scale for the cold compressed layer. The aim is to simplify and unify the attempts that have been made at producing mathematical models for the collapse and fragmentation of gaseous protoclusters of galaxies. Attention is given mainly to the cooling and fragmentation aspects of the theory, with a view to seeing just what kind of objects form in a pancake. It is pointed out that the dependence of the fragment mass and spin on the properties on the initial protocluster is of central importance to this theory.
