This thesis addresses aspects of two fundamental questions in cosmology: (I) What is the origin of the baryon asymmetry in our universe? (II) How did galaxies and the observed large-scale structure form? Part I investigates cosmic strings in the SO(10) grand-unified theory and string -induced baryon-number violating processes. New string solutions in the SO(10) theory are constructed. The nontrivial structure of the scalar fields is found to cause mixing of leptons and quarks in the fermion multiplet, giving rise to nonzero baryon-number violating cross section. Part II of this thesis contains a full general-relativistic treatment of the linear theory of gravitational perturbations in a cold+hot dark matter universe. The purpose is to obtain an accurate sampling of the full neutrino phase space for the initial conditions of N-body simulations in these models. A general-relativistic cosmological N -body technique is adopted, in which the metric perturbations are first obtained by a numerical integration of the coupled, linearized Boltzmann, Einstein and fluid equations. Then the geodesic equations for the neutrinos in the perturbed background spacetime are integrated from redshift z=10 ^9 to z=13.55, using the metric found in the previous calculation. This method provides a much more accurate sampling of the neutrino phase space than the conventional Zel'dovich approximation.
