Underwater sparks have long been used by the geophysical prospecting community as a source of intense low-frequency sound. Experiments are currently being conducted to investigate the usefulness of these spark sources in low-frequency active sonar systems. The mechanism of converting electrical energy to acoustic energy in these sources is not well understood. In this work a model of the spark source is developed which permits a calculation of the partition of energy into acoustic and other forms, hence allowing one to predict the efficiency of these underwater sound sources. The predictions of this model are compared with an extensive set of experimental results.
