The capture hypothesis of Hasagawa (1976) was reformulated to take into consideration the effect of external force fields on the capture of comets by the Sun. The reformulated hypothesis prediction of the distribution of direct and retrograde cometary orbits is in good agreement with observational reports. The observed distribution of longitudes and latitudes aphelia of long-period comets is also well explained by the capture hypothesis. It is inferred that this hypothesis of capture of comets from the Oort cloud and under the influence of closely passing stars will also explain other features of cometary dynamics.
