Many objects are known to possess circumstellar dust shells whose composition can be inferred by observations at wavelengths from the far ultraviolet to the far infrared. Here we discuss work carried out recently into what happens to the long wavelength emission from a dust shell when the central source of heating radiation is intrinsically variable.
