It is suggested that there exists a universal law of nature according to which the density of matter is always subject to an upper limit given by an expression constructed from the universal constants the speed of light, Planck's constant, and the gravitational constant. As an example, a modified Einstein equation is derived which at a low density of matter turns out to be a canonical Einstein equation without the constant term. For a density of matter at the upper limit the equations describe a de Sitter universe.
