A theoretical analysis is presented of the effect of the structure of plasma density and velocity distributions in the low-latitude magnetospheric boundary layer on the excitation conditions of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The mathematical model and the algorithm used in the analysis are described in detail, and numerical results are presented. It is shown that, in the case of a sufficiently large plasma-density drop, the boundary of the instability is displaced toward the short-wave region.
