It is pointed out that cometary missions planned in the near future will not shed light on such important questions as the origin of comets and the internal structure, composition, and dynamics of cometary nuclei. It is thought that information may be gained on the Oort cloud using a space observatory equipped with a large telescope in an orbit outside the Jovian planets. Detailed information on the dynamics of cometary nuclei may be provided by a spacecraft moving at a relatively small distance from the nucleus and sending smaller probes that penetrate the cometary medium. Asteroids, which in many cases may constitute 'dead' cometary nuclei, are seen as possible sources of information on comets, as are meteoroid streams.
